People´s Love For Animals
Earthwatch: A Diary of the Planet LA TIMES 11/11/99 Rising waters
on Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba have trapped thousands of animals that
are now being fed by a massive relief effort launched by conservationists
and farmers in the southern African nation. The animals are facing
starvation on islands that are shrinking as the lake fills with
water from the region's unusually wet rainy season. The high water
levels have forced the wildlife back from shoreline grazing into
the treeline where there is no food. A series of droughts in the
1980's caused the lake's water levels to drop dramatically and enabled
the animals to cross easily from the mainland to areas that were
formerly islands. Farmers have donated more than 100 tons of food
and transported it on their own trucks to the city of Kariba. Volunteers
are ferrying the supplies to the stranded animals, mostly imipalas,
hippos, baboons, and waterbucks.

Loyal To The Grave
(From LA Times) A grieving sheepdog left the home of his new owners
in Chesire, Britain, and set out on a sad journey last Christmas
Eve to find the grave of his deceased master, a place he had never
been. The border collie Spot traveled four miles from his new home,
dodging traffic on main highways, until he eventually found the
cemetery where the farmer who had been his owner was buried. A policeman
found Spot lying on the grave of his master in the yard of St. James
Church,. The dog was taken to the home of the trainer where he was
born. The trainer plans to enter Spot in local sheepdog trials.
The dog´s new home is appropriately named "Dunroamin."
From LA TIMES: Argentina's state-run Telam news agency reported
that a dog in the northwest of the country saved his 4-year-old
master from a swarm of bees by flinging itself over the boy's body
in an attempt to block the attack. Kharin Toloza was playing with
his dog Chocolate near Valle Viejo when he was attacked by the insects.
The dog immediately jumped on top of the boy and stayed there until
the body was taken to a hospital after receiving only a few stings.
While Kharin survived the attack, the dog died as a result of numerous
stings.
