Your mental focus is inward, even if you are doing something physical (reading, writing, watching something, programming a computer, driving, dancing, walking, running, playing a video game, solving an equation), you are focused on what you are thinking, imagining, visualizing and/or feeling. Your subconscious is more open and accepting of suggestions and directives in all levels of hypnosis.
Light
Hypnosis: Your eyes can be open or closed.
You are aware of your surroundings and everything that is going on around
you, but your focus is inward. If a
hypnotist is hypnotizing you, you are aware of what the hypnotist (and others
who may be present) is doing/saying, but you are more focused on what you are
feeling/thinking and/or seeing or imagining inwardly.
To hypnotize you, the hypnotist will describe a peaceful scene and/or
keep repeating a word, phrase, sound, visual image, or touch that is acceptable
to you. This is to help you focus
on thoughts, feelings, and/or mental images that are inwardly pleasing to you.
If you are given a suggestion/directive that is not acceptable to you,
you can counter this by thinking you do not accept it.
After the hypnosis, discuss with your hypnotist what was unacceptable to
you. If it was a
suggestion/directive that you morally or socially object to, do not let that
person hypnotize you again.
Medium Hypnosis: Your eyes can be open or closed. You are aware of where you are and what you are doing, but you are only vaguely aware of and concerned with what is going on around you. If a hypnotist is hypnotizing you, you are aware of the hypnotist’s voice, but you are not paying attention to what it is saying. If the hypnotist asks you a question or asks you to take a physical action, your subconscious will respond appropriately. This will draw your conscious attention to what you are doing/saying, but will not lighten your hypnosis unless you begin to analyze what is happening (analysis comes after hypnosis!) and/or become concerned with what your hypnotist and others who may be present are reacting to what you are saying/doing. If you are given a directive/suggestion that your subconscious finds objectionable because of your social, moral, or emotional programming, it will block that suggestion/directive.
Deep Hypnosis: Your eyes can be open or closed. Your inner focus is so complete you are completely unconcerned with what is going on around you. (Like being completely “lost” in your thoughts, a daydream, a book, a movie, a video game.) If a hypnotist is hypnotizing you, you are subconsciously aware of what the hypnotist is saying/doing, but your conscious awareness is elsewhere.
Hypno-Sleep: Similar to sleep, not conducive to hypnotic suggestion or regressions.
If what is
being said or done while you are in medium or deep hypnosis is sufficiently
disturbing to your subconscious, it will lighten the hypnotic state so that you
are consciously aware of what is happening and being said, thus giving you the
opportunity to end the hypnosis if you choose to do so.
If you trust your hypnotist, discuss what happened.
If you do not trust your hypnotist, find one you can trust.
Physical Signs of Hypnosis: Can have one, some, or all of the
following — a notable heavy or light feeling in part of or all of the body; a
sinking or floating feeling in part of or all of the body; feeling as though you
are out of your body or some part of the body has moved
into a different position on its own (sometimes people open their eyes to check
on this); eyes redden (due to relaxed capillaries in the eyes) and/or tear; jaws
slacken; a feeling of becoming larger or smaller; breathing and pulse rate slow
down; a pronounced feeling of passive acceptance to pleasing
suggestions/directives that are acceptable to one’s mental, emotional, social,
moral programming.
What Blocks Deeper Levels of Hypnosis: 1) Analyzing what is happening during the hypnosis, rather than waiting until after the hypnosis to analyze what happened. 2) Judging self for what you say/see/feel/do when hypnotized. 3) Concerns about what your hypnotist or others might think about you or what you say in hypnosis. 4) Distrust of your hypnotist and/or hypnosis. 5) Fear you or your subconscious is ‘making things’ up in hypnosis. NOTE: NMR can verify the source and validity or invalidity of what is found in hypnosis.
Few people are able to change a habitual way of thinking, feeling, acting in a day unless they are completely ready for and open to that change. This is the purpose of recordings. You can either play a recording daily until the change you are seeking happens or you can have daily hypnosis sessions with a reputable hypnotist. When you play the recording, sit down and lean back or lie down. You are more likely to accept the suggestions given in a passive state of hypnosis. Do not play it when driving or doing anything else that requires you to focus on what you are doing. If you find you just won’t/don’t play the recording on a regular basis or you find yourself irritable or upset when you play it, or you continually misplace the recording, there is something in the recording that you are resisting or blocking. It could be the goal itself or something suggested for achieving that goal. Discuss this with a reputable hypnotherapist or psychotherapist, both of whom should be practiced in using hypnosis and/or EMDR for regression therapy; i.e. working with inner (subconscious/unconscious) blocks and resistance to manifesting your goals, including healing. .
As one client so succinctly
put it: “Hypnotherapy is not about problems, it’s about solutions.”
